Corneille Tapestries and Rugs

The Modern Masters Tapestries Gallery proudly presents an awe-inspiring collection of mesmerizing tapestries and rugs, infused with the visionary artistry of Corneille.

Corneille, a Dutch artist, exploded onto the 1950s scene with vibrant, Expressionist paintings that challenged the conservative art world. He was a key figure in the CoBrA movement (1948-1951), alongside artists like Asger Jorn and Karel Appel. This group drew inspiration from unconventional sources like children’s art, works from psychiatric hospitals, and folk traditions. This fusion resulted in powerfully expressive paintings, exemplified by “Memoires de CoBrA 2” (1950-2004).

Corneille’s artistic spirit resonated with the likes of Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Paul Klee – a shared passion for color, form, and nature. His canvases often featured recurring themes like cats, birds, and women, sometimes depicted in fantastical, mythological settings as seen in “Oiseau multicolore” (1978) and “China Suite I” (2004). Beyond paintings, Corneille embraced various artistic mediums. He honed his printmaking skills under Stanley William Hayter in the 1950s and experimented with ceramics, sculptures in wood, and bronze pieces.
