Youth and early career
Enki Bilal, born Enes Bilal on October 7, 1951 in Belgrade, Serbia, is a French comic book author and director of Bosnian and Czech origin. Considered one of the most important authors of Franco-Belgian comics, he is known for his unique style and complex stories that explore themes such as science fiction, politics, religion and philosophy.
Bilal spent his childhood in Yugoslavia before settling in France with his family in 1967. He began his career in comics in 1972 with the publication of his first series, Le Bol maudit, in Pilote magazine. His collaboration with screenwriter Pierre Christin on series like Les Phalanges de l’ordre noir and La Femmetrap made him known to the general public and propelled him to the rank of major authors of French comics.
