Sonia Delaunay “La Courbe Grise” Tapestry

Sonia Delaunay’s tapestry La Courbe Grise was created around 1970-1972 at the Pinton workshops in Aubusson. The tapestry is a handwoven work made of wool and measures 184 x 135 cm. It is signed “Sonia Delaunay” and also features the Pinton workshops monogram. An attached “bolduc,” or tapestry passport, on the reverse side identifies it as “La Courbe Grise” and indicates it was made with a production number of “5/6”.
Sonia Delaunay was a multi-disciplinary artist who worked in painting, design, fashion, and textiles, and was a key figure in the Parisian avant-garde. She was a pioneer in developing abstract art and a co-founder of the art movements Orphism and Simultanism, which focused on the effects of juxtaposing colors and shapes. The artist’s work with textiles and tapestries was part of her overall philosophy of integrating art into everyday life.
