At PAD Paris, our gallery will showcase a curated group of significant twentieth-century tapestries, led by “Sao Paolo” by Fernand Léger. A central figure of modernism, Léger created a distinctive visual language marked by bold colors, rhythmic compositions, and a fusion of human and mechanical forms. In “Sao Paolo”, these elements converge in a dynamic composition that translates strikingly into tapestry, where the woven medium amplifies both structure and depth.
The presentation will also feature important works by Alexander Calder and Man Ray, among others, demonstrating how major twentieth-century artists embraced tapestry as a natural extension of their practice. Calder’s “Balloon Barrage” embodies his characteristic interplay of movement and simplicity, while Man Ray’s “Legend” brings a more conceptual and graphic sensibility to the medium.
Together, these works underscore the vital collaboration between modern artists and historic weaving ateliers, which played a key role in revitalizing tapestry in the twentieth century.
We look forward to welcoming you at PAD Paris, April 8–12.
