At this year’s The Winter Show, Modern Masters Tapestries is delighted to present a focused group of exceptional 20th-century tapestries, highlighted by Fernand Léger’s São Paulo (1953). Conceived from an original design created for an ambitious architectural project in Brazil, this rare Aubusson tapestry captures Léger at the height of his mature style. Bold, confident forms and radiant color are balanced with a strong sense of rhythm between the human figure and the modern world.
Encountering São Paulo in tapestry form offers a uniquely intimate experience of Léger’s work. The composition feels both monumental and tactile. Colors gain warmth, lines take on physical presence, and the surface invites close, lingering attention. Woven in Aubusson by the Pinton atelier in a limited edition, the tapestry reflects a thoughtful collaboration between the artist and master weavers, where Léger’s graphic language is carefully translated through texture, scale, and material.
Our presentation at The Winter Show celebrates this dialogue between modern art and traditional craftsmanship. These works are not only visually striking but deeply human, shaped by the hands that wove them and the ideas that inspired them. We warmly invite you to visit us at the Park Avenue Armory, Booth C5, and spend time with São Paulo and the surrounding selection. They are works meant to be lived with, offering a powerful visual presence alongside a lasting sense of history, craft, and modern vision.
