Joan Miró “Hirondelle Amour” Tapestry
Joan Miró’s “L’Hirondelle Amour” is a stunning fusion of modernist abstraction and traditional tapestry craftsmanship. Originally conceived as a painting in 1933—now housed in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York—this composition has been reimagined in textile form, bringing a new dimension to Miró’s signature style.
The tapestry adaptation of L’Hirondelle Amour was first commissioned in 1974 by Nelson Rockefeller, who sought to transform his treasured painting into a woven masterpiece. Working alongside the renowned artisans of Aubusson, Miró supervised the translation of his fluid, dreamlike forms into a bold, tactile expression of movement and color. The name Hirondelle—French for “swallow”—is echoed in the swooping, darting shapes, evoking the energy of birds in flight.
A New Chapter in Miró’s Tapestry Legacy
Modern Masters Tapestries Gallery is honored to be the first gallery to exhibit the newest edition of “L’Hirondelle Amour”, woven under an exclusive collaboration between ADAGP, the Mobilier National, and Pinton Manufacture. This project, a milestone in contemporary tapestry production, ensures Miró’s legacy continues to flourish in the textile medium.
Under the supervision of Pinton Manufacture, a maximum of eight numbered editions of “L’Hirondelle Amour” have been produced, each marked with the official insignia of ADAGP, the Mobilier National, and Pinton, guaranteeing authenticity and historical significance. This initiative represents a revival of the great French tapestry tradition, seamlessly linking past and present.
As Joan Punyet Miró, the artist’s grandson, has stated, the results of this project are nothing short of “extraordinary.” Expertly crafted by Atelier Pinton, the tapestry embodies Miró’s dynamic movement, biomorphic forms, and poetic abstraction, reinforcing that tapestry was not a secondary medium for the artist but an integral part of his artistic language.
Modern Masters Tapestries Gallery proudly presents this rare opportunity to experience “L’Hirondelle Amour”—a masterwork that bridges modernist painting and the centuries-old heritage of Aubusson weaving.
